OPG Update on Japan Events
By Tom Mitchell
President and CEO, Ontario Power Generation (OPG)

OPG has been reaching out to its neighbours, colleagues and fellow Ontarians to share information about its own operations that have been in the spotlight because of the events in Japan. OPG has also working to keep everyone informed through its website, providing up-to-date information as it becomes available.

A special web page on opg.com is dedicated to the Japan earthquake and provides information and links based on questions people have asked about OPG’s nuclear facilities.

The nuclear industry is working together
All Canadian nuclear operators have committed to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) that they will work together via a joint committee to ensure the safety and accident management processes of their operations are robust, and that timely action is taken to address any lessons learned from Fukushima Daiichi. Progress from the joint committee will be reported to both the CNSC and WANO.

To date, OPG's work on this joint effort has involved confirming existing defences and evaluating for potential gaps to both design and beyond-design basis accidents. Eleven multi-discipline teams within OPG are conducting a large number of field and tabletop activities in support of this response. These teams have already submitted a portion of their preliminary findings and additional weekly submissions will be provided over the next few weeks.

The goal of all this work is to learn from the natural disaster in Japan and to use this learning to help improve the performance of OPG’s nuclear stations and its emergency response efforts.

Should you be interested in more information about nuclear safety in Canada, Pierre Tremblay, OPG's Senior Vice President of Nuclear Programs and Training recently delivered a keynote address and presentation at the Enercom Conference in Toronto.
