OCCr1Successful Annual General Meeting Updates Chamber’s Policy Priorities

Twenty-three new policy resolutions now form part of the OCC’s policy priorities as a result of the debates held at the 2010 OCC Annual General Meeting & Convention earlier this month. Approximately 150 delegates discussed issues pertaining to the OCC’s key priorities:
• a competitive tax & regulatory regime
• modernizing energy and infrastructure
• a skilled workforce
• the transition to the new economy, and other topics.

Significant policy themes include: the need for greater transparency and accountability on provincial, municipal and school board taxation and spending; a continental approach to air and emissions regulations; significant investments in universities and the creation of a provincial workplace literacy strategy; and a stronger focus on Northern Ontario issues, including the need to repeal the province’s proposed Far North Act.

In addition to the policy debates, delegates had an opportunity to learn more about the province’s priorities in the economy and trade and investment when Finance Minister Dwight Duncan and Minister of Economic Development and Trade, The Honourable Sandra Pupatello, addressed the audience. In addition, there was a comprehensive discussion about sustainability and profitability of going green as well as a keynote on the topic by the CEO of the Ontario Power Authority, Colin Andersen.

Other speakers at the conference included: Chief Angus Toulouse, AFN Regional Chief, Ontario, and Kevin Johnson, Consul General, United States Consulate Toronto.
